Autumn Winter 2023

Sadie, Sadie

For Autumn Winter 2023, Talia Byre champions the anti-hero by drawing inspiration from her own road to independence, as well as the leading women in seminal films such as THE GRADUATE [1967] and FUNNY GIRL [1968].

Instead of adhering to societal pressures, why not – for the sheer thrill of it – indulge in all of the traits that are deemed as untoward? Whether it’s self-centred, outlandish, or promiscuous behaviour (or a delightful concoction of all the above), this season’s character is unrepentant about their actions. And their wardrobe reflects a carefree bliss, along with a fearless, go-getter attitude.

From screen-printed leopard motifs on wool and cashmere separates, to form-fitting maxi dresses in black and dark cherry brown featuring deep V-necks and cut-outs, there’s a play on toughness while maintaining sensuality. Although certain pieces are covered-up, for the most part, the undoing of a single button can slip the entire look into more daring territories.

Tailoring is integral, too, involving precision-cut poplin shirts with cinched waistlines and woven stripe details, along with navy statement coats that come in supersoft wool and waterproof technical fabric. With hues ranging from chocolate and chalky lilac, to grapefruit and emerald green, the distinctive palette is an ode to American painter HELEN FRANKENTHALER’S pioneering work, JACOB’S LADDER [1957].

The show takes place at LANT STREET WINES in Southwark, where Jermaine Gallacher’s intimate interiors provide the ideal setting to observe the anti hero in action. Who said that life’s all about conformity and wedding bells? This season, Talia Byre delivers a proverbial middle finger to the expectations that come with tradition.
